Understanding RECA, together
A process to navigate.
Support along the way.
The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act established a federal compensation program for people with certain serious illnesses following qualifying exposure connected to the U.S. nuclear weapons program, or their eligible survivors.
The requirements involve specific diagnoses, places, dates and supporting records. Finding and organizing paperwork can be overwhelming for most people.
You obtain the required documents. AMG guides you to sources, reviews the documents for completeness, organizes your claim materials and prepares the administrative handoff to Harward & Hawes, a separate law firm. Any representation depends on the firm accepting the matter and a written engagement agreement.
Bring your questions. Start with AMG’s initial eligibility review, then learn what records and next steps your situation may require.
Our roots, our reason
A local company.
A personal commitment.
AMG is a family-run company based in Salt Lake City, providing RECA paperwork support for families in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.
All three founders have lost someone to cancer. After seeing how difficult the process can be, they started AMG to help families understand their options and navigate the next steps with care.
Who may qualify
Radiation Exposure Compensation Act:
Two pieces of your history matter.
One category covers people often referred to as downwinders.
Your eligibility depends on meeting the presence requirements for a covered area and the requirements for a covered cancer diagnosis. Both requirements matter.
Where you were, and when.
DOJ lists Idaho, New Mexico and Utah, plus specified areas of Arizona and Nevada. Physical presence must meet a qualifying duration and period.
A state connection alone does not establish eligibility.
A diagnosis covered by RECA.
Certain cancers are covered, with specific exclusions. The covered diagnosis must follow your qualifying presence in an affected area, and diagnosis and supporting records must meet the requirements for the category.
A cancer diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility.

- One year in New Mexico between September 24, 1944 and November 6, 1962; or
- One year in an affected area between January 21, 1951 and November 6, 1962; or
- Presence in an affected area for the entire period June 30–July 31, 1962.
Arizona: Coconino, Yavapai, Navajo, Apache, Gila and Mohave counties. Nevada: White Pine, Nye, Lander, Lincoln and Eureka counties, and Clark County townships 13–16 at ranges 63–71. See DOJ for the complete disease list and individual requirements.
Other histories may count.
RECA also has categories for onsite nuclear test participants, qualifying uranium workers and people affected by Manhattan Project waste. Their rules and payment amounts differ. Eligible survivors may also apply.

A little more clarity
Questions are
a good place to start.
Does an eligibility check mean I am approved?
No. It is an initial review. The Department of Justice makes eligibility determinations. Compensation is not guaranteed.
Can I explore options for a loved one who died?
Eligible survivors may apply under RECA. Survivor rules depend on the claim category and family relationship. Review the official requirements before filing.
Is Cancer Fund Recovery part of the government?
No. Cancer Fund Recovery is operated by AMG Recovery Services, LLC. AMG provides private administrative assistance, is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the government or DOJ.
Where do I share my information?
This page has no intake form. The eligibility links take you to cancerfundrecovery.com. Read its privacy policy and service terms before providing personal or medical information.
Who handles preparation and legal work?
You obtain the required records. AMG guides you to sources, reviews the records for completeness, organizes your claim materials and prepares the administrative handoff to Harward & Hawes. AMG is separate from the firm and does not provide legal advice. The firm handles legal work and any representation subject to its case acceptance and a written engagement agreement. Visiting this page or submitting AMG’s questionnaire does not create an attorney-client relationship. AMG is not a law firm.
Is there a filing deadline?
DOJ states that all claims must be filed by December 31, 2027. Start by understanding the records your situation may require. Timing depends on your circumstances and does not guarantee an outcome.
